MEET NEYLAND (AKA SMOKEY XII)
He’s a two-year-old pup that the university learned about by word of mouth from within the East Tennessee bluetick coonhound rescue community.

He’s 59 pounds of personality and playfulness.
LEARNING THE ROPES
Through reward-based training, Smokey is learning basic obedience cues and acclimation to the stadium environment.
BIG DEBUT
Smokey took the field for the first time during the Orange and White game in April. He also attended basketball games to help get used to the noise of rowdy crowds.
A NEW HOME
He’s currently being fostered by an employee of the College of Veterinary Medicine while he gets ready for his new job.
READY FOR TAKEOFF
His foster says Smokey has a beautiful run, and his ears look like plane propellers ready for takeoff!
A TRUE HOUND
Smokey is relentless and stubborn and loves to follow his nose wherever it leads.
SNACK OF CHOICE
He loves to lick some tasty peanut butter.

Hooves and bones. Soft toys don’t stand a chance!
GUARD DOG
Smokey does regular door checks to make sure he knows where everyone is in the house.
MAKE SOME NOISE
Smokey has proven himself to be a loud boy. Get ready to hear him baying and howling!
BIRTHDAY
Though his birthday is unknown, Smokey will share a ceremonial birthday with UT on September 10.
Smokey XI retired after the 2025 football season to live his best life. Smokey X is receiving palliative care for kidney cancer at the College of Veterinary Medicine and remains deeply loved by Vol nation.
