Vol Compliments

“Devan Pope got a haircut, and now she looks like an educated, beautiful, sophisticated hipster who will probably end up as the best orchestra director the world has ever known.”

“To the dear Seth Watkins—If you could please grace us with more random visits and bear hugs, we would all be eternally grateful.”

Ever notice how a compliment about a new haircut or your ability to administer great bear hugs can make your day?

It certainly hasn’t escaped the notice of the creators of Vol Compliments, a new Facebook page spreading kind words and appreciation to students, faculty, and staff.

The page—based on a similar page for Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada—has attracted more than 1,200 users and a barrage of messages since going live in early January.

Here’s how it works. Friends of the page can send a private message about someone to the Vol Compliments admins. That message, as long as it is positive, is posted to the page, and the receiver of the compliment is tagged.

Then, warm fuzzy feelings ensue.

“We felt the need to spread happiness around UT’s campus,” say the page creators, who wish to remain anonymous. “We wanted to counteract the negativity that is so often found on the Internet.”

And it’s not just the people receiving compliments who profit from the good vibes. It’s hard not to smile when reading entries like:

“Zachary Brown is one of the greatest and most inspiring people I have met at UT. He is the spark that ignites all Torchbearers.”

Not to mention those words that may inspire a giggle or two:

“Phillip Stephenson has one of the best beards I’ve ever seen. It looks so good, especially with that nice touch of orange!”

The creators say that keeping up with all of the requests is taking a fair amount of time, but they are happy to do it.

“We are honored to be able to spread so much love. It’s an incredible feeling to help brighten the days of our peers.”

Kyle McCammon is a talented saxophone player and one of the most kind young men I have ever met. If you ever get the chance to meet him, you are a lucky person.
