Elma Neal Roane, of Cordova, TN, died September 19, 2011. Elma graduated from the University of Tennessee with a master’s degree from the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. She was one of the founders and second president of the Tennessee College Women’s Sports Federation, formed in 1969, to re-institute intercollegiate athletic programs and competitions for women. She was also the first recognized women’s athletics director at Memphis State University (now The University of Memphis). She was officially appointed the Director of Women’s Athletics in 1977, a position she held until retirement in 1984. Ms. Roane’s achievements and contributions have distinguished her as a leader in education and in women’s athletics. She received numerous awards and honors and personifies the meaning of women in education and sport, with a lifetime of carving a path for future female leaders.
