William E. Cole, of Knoxville, died July 14, 2011. Dr. Cole retired from the Department of Economics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he served as professor of economics from 1965 to 1996 and department head from 1983 to 1986. He earned a bachelor’s degree (1952) and a doctor’s degree (1965) from the University of Texas Austin. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellow in 1964, was an industrial development specialist for the United Nations 1970-1972, and awarded the Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award in 1974. He authored and co-authored numerous books and publications during his career and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1952-1955 in Korea.
