Joseph Hendee “Coach Joe” (1983)

Joseph Hendee “Coach Joe,” of Knoxville, died April 24, 2011. Joe entered the University of Tennessee in 1978 as an Undergraduate Assistant with the Men’s Swimming and Diving Team. He remained with the team until his death, becoming the longest-tenured assistant coach in the history of men’s athletics at Tennessee. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1983 from the College of Business Administration. When not coaching the Vols, Joe served the U.S. as an international coach and mentor. He assisted Coach Bussard during his stint as 1984 U.S. Olympic coach. In 1986, Joe served USA Swimming as a coach at the Elite Training Camp in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He also coached at the 1989 and 1993 U.S. Olympic Festivals. Because of his dedication and service to the University of Tennessee swim program, Joe was inducted into the Tennessee Swimming Hall of Fame in 2003.
