As the nation marked the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in April, UT Knoxville alumni and friends had two opportunities to learn more about the conflict.
Approximately 100 alumni and friends came to campus on April 29 to participate in a Civil War-themed College for a Day program. Three faculty members offered engaging presentations. Joan Markel presented “Civil War Maps of East Tennessee: The Genius of Orlando Poe,” Dan Feller presented “Slavery and the Coming of the Civil War,” and Bruce Wheeler presented “New Twists on an Old Story: East Tennessee and the Civil War”.
On May 14, fifteen alumni and friends took a Lifelong Learning excursion to Shiloh National Park. The group spent time at the Shiloh Interpretive Center in Corinth, Mississippi, and was led on a tour of the battleground by a US Park Ranger. Lunch was enjoyed at the famous Catfish Hotel.
