Young Alumni Council Selects First Scholarship Recipient

The University of Tennessee Young Alumni Council (YAC) has chosen its first-ever scholarship recipient: Marcie Masterson, a graduate nursing student at UT Knoxville.

Formed in 2008, the YAC’s motto is “Connected Today. Empowered Tomorrow,” and the scholarship is an extension of meeting this mission. Masterson was chosen specifically for her leadership and community activities as well as her professional goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. “The program is 31 months of rigorous study of anesthesia,” Masterson said. “I am looking forward to the challenge and am anxious to continue my education, eventually planning to earn my doctorate in this field.”

A former resident assistant, Delta Gamma sorority member, and volunteer at such local organizations as Habitat for Humanity, Lost Sheep Ministry, and Fountain City United Methodist Church, Masterson values community involvement and represents the philanthropic spirit associated with the university and YAC. “Wherever the setting, I do my best to lead by example,” Masterson said.

Funds raised through the YAC Spring Weekend enabled the scholarship to be given and it is especially significant because young alumni donated the money to benefit a fellow young alumna. “Marcie’s commitment to her education, university, and community make her a great first recipient for the Young Alumni Council Scholarship,” said Steve Evans, philanthropy chair. “She represents the type of young alumni the university produces in her pursuit of education and leadership opportunities.”
