April 17-18 marked the spring Young Alumni Council meeting and spring Young Alumni Weekend activities.
The weekend kicked off Friday morning when the Young Alumni Council held its third meeting on campus in the newly renovated Crest Room of the University Center. The five-hour meeting began with lunch and then moved into committee meetings prior to the general council meeting. Margie Nichols, interim vice chancellor for communications, gave a great update on campus branding and relationships with media.
There was also a significant amount of new business at the meeting, including the establishment a new UT Young Alumni Scholarship to help a young alum with graduate school costs, and the establishment of a president-elect position for the council’s Leadership Board. Both items passed unanimously, and the new president-elect of the council for 2009-10 is Scott Coop of Nashville. Coop will serve as the 2010-11 president of the Young Alumni Council. The council also discussed the application process for new members. Applications, which were due on April 30, totaled more than 80. New members will be announced in June.
Saturday, April 18, was a historic day for the UT Young Alumni program: the largest Young Alumni event to date was held on campus! More than 200 Young Alumni from 10 states came back to campus for a day full of activities including a campus athletic facilities tour, premium seating in the East Skybox for the Orange & White spring football game, and an evening program in the new James A. Haslam II Business Building (formerly Glocker). The day was certainly memorable, and is a great milestone for one of the newest alumni programs at UT Knoxville!
