Pride of the Southland Marching Band is a mainstay of tradition and excellence at the University of Tennessee, and the Knoxville campus extends a huge thank you to the alumni band for coming out in full force to march in the homecoming festivities. Additional thanks to those alumni and friends who came out and cheered them on!
Dr. Bill Burkhart, Band Alumni Board president, announced that the band has raised over $2.2 million toward the band’s $2.5 million goal as part of the Campaign for Tennessee. The funds will be used for scholarships as well as establishing a faculty endowment in honor of Dr. W J Julian.
Burkhart also announced plans for the Pride of the Southland Reunion event set for next year. In addition to time-honored Homecoming activities on Saturday, Pride alums will also gather on Friday afternoon followed by a “Celebration of the Pride” event on Friday evening, November 6, 2009. The band reunion will be held at the Knoxville Marriott and will be open to friends and fans as well as alumni of the band. A Facebook group has also been created. Search UT Pride Alumni on Facebook.com and join the group.
According to Burkhart, “this Reunion Celebration is designed to be a time to bring alumni back together as well as showcase the band to other friends. It replaces the galas held in 2005 and 2006 with an event that will contain costs so families can participate. By holding this at the Marriott, we hope that fans in town for the weekend will join us, too.” This will be a great time to celebrate the successes of the Pride and re-connect with friends and families. The full band, special guests, and entertainment will also be part of the evening festivities.
Room reservation information will be sent closer to the event. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Alumni Affairs (865-974-3011) or Lauren Zaller (865-974-2509, email@example.com). We look forward to seeing you next year!
